“Pick of the Week” is a home I’ve recently toured in person which I believe makes for a great buy based on its status as a Great Home Design in a Great Location for a Great Price!
By any rational measure, a home listed over $1M should not be a disappointment in any way. And indeed, I can affirm after walking through this one in Oakland’s beautiful (and I really mean beautiful) Crocker Highlands neighborhood that this one surely is in every way a distinct pleasure. Let’s begin with the moment when I was standing on the front landing by the entry and it was so quiet at this location that I could hear the pleasant din of a small water fountain— coming from across the street! Inside you’ll find a split level home with numerous ups and downs between rooms and period details to make those who love homes from the 1920s swoon. But aside from the gracious design you’d never know this home is an eighty-six year old. She’s a spritely retiree if she’s a retiree at all! The modern kitchen is equipped with chef-level appliances, stone counters and new cabinets; all the makings of the the 21st century standard of a luxury kitchen. Both bathrooms are also fully updated as well, and thus the feel of the vital functions of the home is like new. More harkening back to a past era, this home is not an open floor plan as we see in many newer homes, or even those of this age that have been altered. Instead, the main floor of this one has a separate formal living room at the front with a huge picture window looking out to the neighborhood, a separate and amply-sized formal dining room, a breakfast nook, a media room/family room, and a full bath. Upstairs are three bedrooms and a full bath, and like a charming bed and breakfast each room seems to have its own unique character. The rooms in the front and back of the home I thought were particularly pleasing in their own ambiance and relation to the site. For example, a lovely deck connects the master suite to the back garden area and gives the room its own very pleasant indoor/outdoor flow. And exiting the home from by way of this deck leads you to the more than a quarter acre lot of this home which gently travels up a sloping hillside with a terraced patio space on the same level and connected to the deck from the master suite. Beyond that patio is a wonderful natural space that many gardeners and little children alike would surely love to explore. And if that isn’t enough, below the main floor is a spacious area where there is a laundry area, a nicely-sized workshop and plenty of storage space. Down one more flight of stairs is an attached garage with two bays for your cars. So overall, it’s a home that has almost everything. Its location is superb in one of Oakland’s most serene and premier neighborhoods; its updating is perfectly suited for modern living; its design enables life’s activities to occur on three levels with plenty of space and PLENTY of charm; and its back garden is on the northwest side of a hill that provides lots of space for a creative landscape. Open this Sunday, it’s one you won’t want to miss!
